Plunge into Debussy. The French pianist and composer Claude Debussy changed classical music at the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century with his extraordinarily beautiful compositions. In Piano Works, the dancer Lisbeth Gruwez and pianist Claire Chevallier perform a physical duet to this ground-breaking music. They are searching for the space between the notes in Debussy’s compositions. The language of movement can be seen as hints and suggestions, in line with Debussy’s quest for ‘la musique immatérelle’. Gruwez and Chevallier let their imagination run wild.
It is the first time that the Belgian choreographer and dancer Lisbeth Gruwez has worked with classical music. After training in classical ballet, she found a new freedom in contemporary dance, and is now a major voice in European dance art. Piano Works is a unique interface between classical and contemporary frameworks, and it sheds an interesting light on Gruwez’s artistic development and trajectory.
