Jazz Ain´t Nothing but Soul is a rhythmically generous production with vibrant music, song and dance. It is centred around the dancers’ movements, which set the intonation and tempo, and act as the rhythmic protagonist throughout the production. The singing and the music are based on the moving body’s choices and physical animation.
Tabanka makes use here of a body language of dance with its roots in African and Caribbean movement traditions. In Caribbean dance traditions (such as the practices of Voodoo and Orisha), the physical body is considered to be something so incredible that even the gods want to borrow it. The steps in dances like Salsa, Reggae, Merengue, Rumba all originate in the gods’ rhythmic steps. From this humble starting point, Tabanka romps into the pleasure and pain of rhythmic movement.
The production will play at Rommen Scene in Stovner.
