Carte Blanche’s 14 dancers are both performers and scenery in this hybrid between performance, visual art and dance.
The essence of Solids is a live installation that plays with our sense of space and challenges our apparently safe existence within a building’s four walls. What happens if the structures you trust are in a state of dissolution? Where does time go when you are sitting still while everything around you is in a constant state of change?
The collaboration between Gómez-Egaña and Carte Blanche challenges the concept of what a dance performance can be. The installation moves, peels off layers and reveals itself. Repeating elements are moved, stretched, bent, knotted and dissolved. The dancers make things happen: they move the walls, manipulate objects and bring energy and presence to a dynamic space that is constantly changing.
Solids is a meditation on the notion that everything that appears to be solid and permanent is actually fragile and temporary. The title is also a reference to Marshall Berman’s book ‘All that is solid melts into air’ (a quote from Marx). The book is about the perception of modernity as a reality in which nothing is stable and nothing is what it seems.
Pedro Gómez-Egaña was born in Colombia and lives and works in Oslo, where in addition to his artistic work, he is a professor of sculpture and installation at the Oslo National Academy of the Arts. His works have been staged in Norway and internationally on prestigious platforms and at renowned biennials.
The installation is open from 13:00–21:00 on Friday 11 and Saturday 12 June, and from 11:00–17:00 on Sunday 13 June. You can buy a ticket for the time slot you want, and you will then be admitted in groups every 15 minutes, max. 3 people per group.
